The Van Gogh Bridge dates from around 1870 and is one of the oldest existing cast iron drawbridges in the Netherlands. The bridge was renovated in 1995 and moved from the lock at Winschoterzijl to the Renselkade, near the McDonald's in Winschoten. According to some, the bridge was named after Vincent van Gogh, because the bridge was moved in 1928 from the twin village of Veenoord - Nieuw Amsterdam (where it would have stood opposite the Van Gogh House) to Winschoterzijl. According to others, the bridge was already placed here in 1890.
